- How to resolve a conflict?
You may choose a particular technique to resolve conflict depending on a few parameters like value of relationship, power equation, time available, priorities etc.
Of the many ways to resolve conflicts, Collaboration seems to be an apt technique (provided issues are important). The steps are mentioned below:
Step 1: Listen first, speak later: Listening is the most important step to conflict resolution; in fact most conflicts happen due to a communication gap. Be open to varied viewpoints and listen to all parties involved.
Step 2: Common meeting with all stakeholders: Get everyone in the same room and encourage an open discussion. Please ensure to be impartial and don’t take sides.
Step 3: Find a WIN-WIN solution: of the various options/solutions suggested, try to find a solution which is win-win for all parties. It may take some time but will ensure a successful long term solution.
While this method of conflict resolution leads to solving the actual problem and in the way fosters mutual trust and respect, it can be costly as it requires time, commitment from all parties to come to a mutually acceptable solution.
